Beer & Clamato?

Posted October 12th, 2007 at 2:06 pm by Nina Lentini

Anheuser-Busch's EVP/CCO Bob Lachky let us in on an ongoing product test of a new product, Chelada, a blend of Bud and Clamato. Clamato? Clam juice?
He says it's big in the Latino culture and predicts it will be huge in '08. Lachky alluded to something apparently similar, Sneaky Pete's? I never heard of this but beer and clam juice has never piqued my interest. Said he used to drink them in college. Personally, I never got past tequila, salt and lemons. Anybody drink Buds and clam juice ever?

Anyway, Cheladas will go up against Miller Chill, already out in the marketplace. Miller Chill contains salt and lime but Cheladas will push the envelope further, adding … Clamato. It sounds so bad it's got to be good. (Sorry, Smuckers.)

  1. Meredith Obendorfer from Blanc and Otus says:

The beer industry is once again co-opting Latino culture for its own profitability. Why am I not suprised?

    1. It's called a Michelada and has been around since the 1940's:

It's fabulous, by the way, and you can get the drink in any Mexican restaurant or taqueria with a well stocked bar. It won't be on the menu, but if you ask for it, the bartender will know what you're talking about.

    2. They don't even celebrate Cinqo de Mayo in Mexico– also known as the biggest Latino holiday in the US. Cinqo de Mayo is about The Battle of Puebla, a fight between the French and the Mexicans. The biggest holidays in Mexico are Independence day (September 16) and the Mexican revolution (November 20) — but then, we don't see any beer campaigns around these dates, do we?

  2. Hugh Burnham from Rare Method Interactive says:

Its not just the latino's that drink beer & clamato. Canadians have drank Clamato & Beer for years … Latino culture is at a minimum in Canada, maybe its just cultures that drink better beer?

Maybe Americans are just learning to drink better beer, American beer (in general) has been pretty awful for quite some time except for some micro brews most of it is mule pee
