Nationwide Insurance, “World’s Greatest Spokesperson”

Nationwide’s hilariously elaborate quest for the “World’s Greatest Spokes-person” came out of the insight that while competitors had strong brand images, Nationwide did not. If Geico can have a little green lizard and cavemen, what could Nationwide do to top it, especially when research showed that consumers frequently misattributed it? The answer was to let consumers in on the joke instead of denying the problem. The search for the “World’s Greatest Spokesman” was on. A mockumentary commercial about the search for the reclusive spokesman, locked away with a burly beard, aired during the Olympics opening ceremonies and were augmented by archival videos elsewhere showing the spokesman’s vintage work from the 1970s and ‘80s; even scenes from his 1980s action movie were planted on YouTube. The spokesman, once employed, appeared in banners (and walked out of them), had his own Facebook page, and engaged consumers.
