OMMA Social: Make Money Making Friends

There’s one thing that’s impervious to the vicissitudes of the economy, and that’s the rise of social media. As of February, according to comScore, Facebook usage surged by 175 percent compared to a year earlier, hitting 275 million visitors globally, making it the sixth largest property on the Web. And Facebook isn’t even the fastest-growing social media network on the globe -- that title belongs to Twitter, the micro-blogging site. ComScore has reported that Twitter grew by 131 percent just between February and March, when it attracted 9.3 million visitors – and that was before celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher and Oprah Winfrey caused hundreds of thousands of people to check out the service for the first time. Social networking on mobile platforms is growing rapidly too; comScore estimates that 26 percent of iPhone users have downloaded the Facebook app for the iPhone, and 23 percent have downloaded iPhone’s MySpace app.

But there’s a dark side to the social media frenzy: even as consumers increasingly flock to social media sites, the attempts by advertisers to find a comfortable place in the online environment is still fraught with challenges. Services such as Facebook are looking to advertisers to help them make money, but the path is not clear. Therefore, attendees of OMMA Social, both onstage and off, will try to ask — and answer — the big questions that will drive social media, and marketers’ association with it:

  • How can my client create an authentic dialogue with consumers in the social media environment?
  • Is media buying in social media better for a client to manage than an agency?
  • Should I even view social media as an advertising platform, or look at it as more of a public relations and customer service tool?
  • What role should mobile play in my social media efforts?
  • Should my company have a Twitter account?
  • How do I target the consumers I want to reach while respecting their privacy?
