Just An Online Minute... Candy From Strangers: Your Millenial Social Media Marketing Plan

At 8:30 a.m. Friday I swooped into The Princeton Club for The Social Media Society's contribution to Social Media Week New York: "Social Media Marketing & Millennials," an interactive focus group moderated by Doug Akin, ringleader and Chief Engagement Officer at Mr. Youth. Akin was actually the last to arrive, which no doubt had the coffee stinging Society founder Persia Tatar's belly a bit, but he had good reason for his late entry: he'd gone to the wrong Ivy League Club. How did he straighten himself out? "I saw a bunch of people from Mr. Youth checking into The Princeton Club on Foursquare."

Just An Online Minute... Is The Future F#cked -- Or Just Touched Inappropriately?

Clomp clomp clomp clomp, I heard my boots thumping into the street as I made my way from 42nd to 44th to 46th. I breathed in the night air and second-hand smoked my way behind some arm-waving unfiltered cig puffer as I discovered I still had four more long blocks to clomp before reaching Hudson Terrace. That's where Ian Schafer, CEO of Deep Focus; Nick Denton, CEO of Gawker Media; and Joe Marchese, President of SocialVibe, were about to tell us if we were indeed F#cked. Moderator Rob Norman, CEO of GroupM, was on hand to keep the panel lubed.

Just An Online Minute... The Key To Viral Success? Sneeze On The Salad Bar!

I left Hammerstein punching my fist into the air and chanting "GTL! GTL!" (Gym, Tan, Laundry), wrestling with choices: Do I turn around as quickly as Ronnie moves his hips on the Karma dance floor and do a shot with a monkey puppet? Or do I stay the course: honoring my commitment to attend "Digital Cocktails: Keys To Social Media Success" as part of my Social Media Week New York coverage? The whole -wheat side of me pulled stronger than the frosted side as I hiked into the black, cold NYC night, blinking through the snow toward For Your Imagination Studios.

Just An Online Minute... Yeah! Addicted Apes And Fist Pumpin' Like A Champ At MTV's Upfront

Last night I attended a Social Media Week Panel at Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan Center. The opening keynote was delivered by hip-hop artist and fleet-footed dancer Usher, while his business associates displayed his social graph through leather-leotard-clad gyrations. Wait. What?

Just An Online Minute... This Still Out: The Definition Of The Social Media Editor Role

Because of the glorious F train, I was running late to this panel, billed as a bright group of women in respected positions discussing how social media has changed the role of the news editor and most intriguing to me, "who 'owns' social media for companies that decide to enter the space to reach their consumers." The first thing I saw when I entered the room all frazzled and sweaty was a great head of fire-roasted hair. It was Charlene Jaszewski, a sharp, irreverent writer and editor. She offered to share her juice (see: outlet splitter) with me and I gratefully accepted, finding myself the best seat mate in the auditorium. Why? Because she's a constant questioner, too, and I found myself leaning in to discuss the panel with her throughout the event. Here are some points that we both discussed:

Just An Online Minute... Black Walls And Skull Lamps Make Social Media Week Official

I made a big mistake today -- the mistake that no intelligent, event- and party-hopping photog/writer who resides in NYC should make during an Internety-themed event week. In between a panel and a party, I... I went home. If you're participating in Social Media Week New York, then you know how grr drat cold it is out there. Imagine if you could sit on your cozy couch and finish up your work. How easy would it be for you to head back into the cold? Now you feel me. I'm motivated, though, because if Toby Daniels can be up for an 8:30 a.m. press conference and remain upright and unflappable, then I sure as hell can make my 14-minute walk from home to Elizabeth Street to join the official opening night celebration.

Just An Online Minute... A Soft(drink) Start To Social Media Week, Sponsored By Pepsi!

This morning I was running ahead of schedule for my first panel of Social Media Week New York. On the way, I saw a new New York moment in the form of two dudes in hip waders breaking up fountain ice. There is always something new to be found in the city of New York. Unfortunately, the same can't be said about panels focusing on branding through social media. Let me turn off my curmudgeon button temporarily and share with you "Branding The Future With Social Engagement, Sponsored by Pepsi Refresh, a do gooder project collecting ideas from people, businesses, and non profits that will positively impact their communities and then, through user voting, will award grants to the brightest bulbs.

Just An Online Minute... The Best Way To Celebrate One Year Of Existence? Declare Something Else Dead!

I left the MediaPost office starving, which is a bad idea, especially since I know that Digital DUMBO won't have food. This is not a big deal, it just means adult Kelly needs to step it up and plan ahead. You know who plans ahead? Rob Blatt, fresh from the Blattcave, and his wife Amber. I ran into them on the street in DUMBO as they were heading to grab sandwiches. As Jenean Chapman, recent Agent 16 defector, strolled by oblivious, I stuck my leg out, scared her, and off we went to the Galapagos Art Space, a place the constantly smells like the YMCA pool.

Just An Online Minute... Unearth Those Red Bull Reserves! It's Social Media Week New York!

Social Media Week New York might be the hardest themed week of events to figure out yet. And if I'm saying that, I can't even imagine how insane it is on the actual event planning side. I have already gone through three revisions to my schedule of coverage, which I don't choose lightly. I think about why you read this column and I also think about how I can also share brain bits along side the chicken sticks. Because I'll be covering day panels, night panels, and night parties, this column is going to published with greater frequency. So look out!

Just An Online Minute... UBUNTU And Room 13 Encourage Art And Humanity

Last night I treated my eyeballs to their favorite meal: a photography and film exhibition. Emmanuel ANdre, Worldwide Operations Director at TBWA Worldwide, was inspired by his trip to South Africa as part of the Room13, a community of art studios connecting professional adults with art-impassioned youths around the world. Each Room 13 is different, but the vision is the same: melding skills, embracing different perspectives, and cultivating curiosity within a thriving ng art community. UBUNTU was born out of Andre's experience. And at the core, UBUNTU is about the importance of being human.
