Air Travelers Avoided 41 Million Trips

According to the Travel Industry Association (TIA), deep frustration among air travelers caused them to avoid an estimated 41 million trips over the past 12 months at a cost of more than $26 billion to the U.S. economy.

The study, conducted by the polling firms of Peter D. Hart Research Associates and The Winston Group, demonstrated that air travelers express little optimism for positive change, with nearly 50 percent saying that the air travel system is not likely to improve in the near future.

Roger Dow, President and CEO of TIA, said "... more than 100,000 travelers each day are voting with their wallets by choosing to avoid trips."

Dow noted that the 41 million avoided trips during the last 12 months rippled outward across the entire travel community:

  • Costing airlines more than $9 billion in revenue
  • Hotels nearly $6 billion
  • Restaurants more than $3 billion
  • Federal, state and local governments lost more than $4 billion in tax revenue

Additional findings of the study:

  • 28% of air travelers avoided at least one trip over the past year (2.1 trips on average) due to the problems in the air travel process.
  • Over the past 12 months, approximately 112,000 trips were avoided per day; a total of 12 million business trips and 29 million leisure trips.
  • More than 60% believe the air travel system is deteriorating
  • 33% of all air travelers are dissatisfied with the air travel system, and 48% of frequent air travelers (5+ trips per year) are dissatisfied
  • 39% of all air travelers feel their time is not respected in the air travel process, and among frequent air travelers that number surges to 51%.
  • Nearly 50% of all air travelers do not think it is likely that the air travel system will be improved in the near future.

Travelers tend to appreciate the convenience and safety of air travel, but at least as many passengers say air travel is frustrating

More and more business travelers are asking the question, why travel when you can meet via TelePresence systems that provide an online meeting experience that's offers amazing images and audio http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps7060/index.html

This research should come as no surprise. Douglas Kelly's comments are absolutely right regarding the tin-badge TSA goons who manhandle and humiliate passengers every chance they get.

I stopped flying when they started taking away perfume bottles, making mothers drink their own breast milk to show that it really was milk, and making fliers take off their shoes.

This whole thing is ridiculous, and the airlines, which could have put a stop to this nonsense at the get go, deserve to go bust. All everyone had to do was say "no" the first time this heavy-handedness arose, and we wouldn't have this situation.

The only thing anyone understands, it seems, is economic trouble. When the airlines, the hotels, the car rental companies and all tourist supported industries suffer, then, and only then, will the madness stop because the lobbyists will be breathing down the necks of their cronies in Washington to make more money.

I travel for business much more than 5 times a year, the minimum to qualify as a frequent flier. And I do so only because I have to for business. I will not fly anymore to any location I can drive to. I will gladly spend more for gas than to tolerate with the delayed and canceled flights, and the total incompetence and anti-customer attitude of the airlines. And the ridiculous Nazi-like TSA security. Upon entering the US from out of the country, first the customs people, then the TSA make an extremely bad impression upon any one, but especially on people who are visiting our country. As an American, I'm ashamed to be represented by these heavy-handed, arrogant and condescending oafs. They are a shameful representation of our country. And, it is yet to be proved that acting like a Nazi has made our country any safer than the countries I fly to that treat me like a human. I'm not a sociologist, but I think something is really wrong in this country, attitude-wise. Am I alone in this thinking?

Correction: the passenger number quoted above is for the top 100 North American airports for 2007

Airports Council International just released the 2007 passenger traffic report for North America. In 2007, they report 1,508,132,204 passengers in North American Airports. The 41 million you refer to here represents 2.7% of total trips last year. While it may be true that vacationers/leisure travelers are cutting back, business travel seems to be holding it's own with cutbacks in hotels, entertainment, etc., instead of number of trips.

This is interesting as we try to assess the future of the where people want to spend their money and what categories of products people are looking to find discounts. Wondering if this research turned up any findings on if this change to air travel has helped the car rental companies in spite of the high gas prices or if people are just choosing not to travel.
