Stressed Out At SMX

I spent two days at SMX East last week, and it was a somewhat surreal experience. The last time I dragged my carcass through the Javits Center was PC Expo during the dot-com boom. SMX was held in the subterranean concrete cavern of the North Pavilion, an exhibit space representing less than a 10th of Javits' exhibit space that still managed to dwarf SMX' 40 or so exhibit booths (now I understand why most search events happen in hotels, whose smaller spaces manage to make them look much bigger than they actually are).

From a vendor/exhibitor perspective, search trade shows present a frustrating conundrum. You want to be there because there's always a chance that an actual prospect will show up, and you can have a meaningful conversation about the services you offer. The problem, however, is that the way the search industry's big shows are set up guarantees that this will almost never happen. I'd guess that three quarters of the attendees at these events are flat-out newbies hired to manage search internally. What attracts them to these shows is the chance to immerse themselves in the various "boot camp" sessions offered, and return to their employers "knowing enough" about search to run internal campaigns. I spoke to several of these newbie search managers and they positively glowed with enthusiasm about "how search is going to turbo-charge my company's business."

The problem, of course, is that a little knowledge -- the kind you can get from sitting in a couple of sessions -- is a very dangerous thing. Anybody can buy clicks, but getting these clicks to actually work for you is among the most maddeningly tough tasks you can undertake. Sadly, I know exactly what's going to happen in the next few weeks as these fresh-from-SMX-boot camp search managers fire up Adwords, upload their keyword lists, and wait for the Google Profit fairy to grace their bottom line, and the inevitable cycle of SEM Grief begins to set in. The first stage will be Denial ("this can't be happening!"), then Anger ("Google is a crook!"), Bargaining ("maybe if I fix my landing pages people will buy from us"), Depression ("it's too late to cut my losses now"), and finally Acceptance ("paid search doesn't work at all").

Don't get me wrong: there's nothing wrong with educating the business masses about search. Our current economic woes will cause marketing retractions and marketing shifts, and it is likely that search -- the most measurable, targetable, and (potentially) efficient marketing channel yet devised -- will continue to gather steam. We in the U.S. must incubate a talented core of people who are qualified to run this thing we call SEM, as well as continue to lead in terms of developing the kind of technology that can intelligently translate business goals into search success.

Someday, I'm sure that SEO and PPC best practices will be formally incorporated into the general curriculum of business schools, colleges, and perhaps even high schools. Nobody will be able to get an MBA without demonstrating the ability to manage, or at least oversee, a successful search campaign. Until that happens, however, we must rely on the trade shows, but as I've indicated, I think these shows paint a partial, misleading picture of what's required to win. At their best, they present tactics and strategies that are obsolete (or soon will be obsolete, thanks to Google, which changes its algorithm twice a day now). The so-called "secrets" they hawk aren't secrets at all -- after all, what vendor in his/her right mind would reveal to the multitudes the actual practices they use to get their clients an advantage? At their worst, they encourage exactly the kind of "get rich overnight" thinking that's led to some much pain in the real estate sector.

We can do much better, but time is short. I don't think the SEM industry is a fad, a craze, or a scam, but if we don't start presenting a more accurate picture of what search is about, including all its terrible budget-burning pitfalls, we shouldn't be surprised if the rest of the business world continues to regard us as a strange cult consisting of the same kind of "geeks bearing formulas" that Warren Buffet so sagaciously warns against.

    Steve, I've been programming search marketing shows for 10 years. Did It has spoken at many of hte ones I've produced, including the SMX East.

    I disagree that we've both -- myself and your employer -- all these years been painting a "misleading" picture of search marketing success, presenting obsolete information, hawk "secrets" or encourage "get rich overnight" thinking. We wouldn't have shows running successfully all that time, if that were the case. And we wouldn't have an industry where many people (in house or agency) have learned and grown into the search marketing space through attendance at shows. Search marketing conferences aren't the perfect education, but they are far from the dismal state of affairs you painted them as, in my view.

    Marc E. - i'll actually defend this article as not being the "biased did-it" type of article..

    i've been thinking about why i took a different path, instead of being SEO Rockstar wheni used to do TV/Radio and print interviews in 1996.. i decided instead to work on my craft and now i am glad i did so..

    i'm sure i could do a session now on SEO in a PR/Ad Agency world and give clients and principals from ad agencies and pr firms advice about how to help, creative, copywriters, PR writers and social media interns from colliding and using each other to the client's benefit.. but am i going to tell anyone how i got a client #3 out of 8,140,000,000. nope...

    the way i see it.. seo speakers find a nugget on a website or a forum, use it then spout it out to the world, thus devaluing it's use, or increasing it in the porn/viagra/mortage/spam sector..

    That was a good inside line, plus if you look at the "major announcements" from NYX you will see the people selling stuff are the ones making the announcements and "teaching" the rules. I don’t drink the juice at all and think there is probably a conflict of interest or two involved. But your points are dead on...and while SMX has good speakers, other industry shows, have less credible speakers.

    Throw all that out at the industry and then leave it with "We can do much better, but time is short"?

    Agreed, there are too many bad apples in SEM (but probably not much different from other industries) and we should strive to do better but... "terrible budget-burning pitfalls"? "strange cult"? If the sky is indeed falling to that degree, perhaps we should be looking at other, more respectable industries for a better model - banking? Healthcare? Real Estate? Advertising?

    Hey, Steve, I think yourand your firm’s focus on ppc-only is once again skewing your perception. First of all, the boot camp sessions represented only ¼ of all the sessions (and they weren’t all ppc oriented either). Secondly, I was there for all three days of the show (not just the two the exhibit hall was open) and found the non-boot camp sessions to be populated mostly by informed and experienced search marketers who were looking to share their knowledge as well as learn from others. Finally, would love to see you using your pulpit to lead with solutions rather than rants that only serve to further the negative image of the industry you seem so concerned about.

    There are so many skill sets needed to be a successful SEM. To think that SMX East Show is a glimpse of the SEM industry, is like going to Home Depot and becoming a contractor. There are alot of tools that the pro' s use, but if you buy one, does that make you a pro? I agree "most people" don't really understand the search industry, but being a SEM it's your job to educate the consumer. I'm sure that the next SMX show will appear to be just another tool show, even old pro's need new tools every now and then.

    Steve,

    While your sentiment isn't new, it is good for high profile writers like yourself to be reminding us interactive agency directors all about the great but perilous opportunities Search affords. Your Grief Stages are dead on, but I'd like to add one more phase: Once a business gives up on search, it takes only one success story from a key competitor to get them fired up again. The second time, however, they hire an agency.

    It is a wild west out there and much more business education is required by businesses, but even more is required by agencies who are hiring just as many unsupervised newbies (I had to at Wingman Media when I ran the interactive agency but couldn't find anyone with any experience at the price range we could afford).

    So let's be sure to reinforce the need for insider training as much as business user training.
