Yahoo Mobile Set To Relaunch

  • February 18, 2009
Yahoo Tuesday announced the forthcoming relaunch of Yahoo Mobile in three formats: Via the mobile Web; as an iPhone application; and as a downloadable app on smartphones from Nokia, Research In Motion, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and those powered by Windows Mobile.

The upgraded Yahoo Mobile is available now in beta before being rolled out more widely during the second quarter. Yahoo's push onto the iPhone and other smartphones reflects the race among Web portals and social networks to offer access on the high-end devices where most mobile media consumption is taking place.

Through its mobile platform, Yahoo also aims to extend its broader strategic goals of being the starting point on the Internet and offer an open, easy-to-use interface. In addition to features like Yahoo oneSearch, Yahoo oneConnect and email, the smartphone version of Yahoo Mobile will include voice search, the Opera Mini mobile Web browser and Yahoo Widgets.

The revamped Yahoo Mobile will feature display advertising from major global brands. The platform will launch first in late March on feature phones and the iPhone, with other smartphones expected to follow in late May. Each version of Yahoo Mobile will debut in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., France, Germany, India, Indonesia and the Philippines before being rolled out in other countries during 2009.--Mark Walsh
