"Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve 2001" Attracts Largest Audience Ever

For the 29th consecutive year, Dick Clark reported live from Times Square on December 31, and "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve(R) 2001" attracted more viewers than every primetime program for the week of December 25 in Total Viewers and the Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54 demographics, according to ABC Television and Nielsen Media Research. The special also drew its largest audience ever among Total Viewers and Adults 25-54 since Nielsen began reporting audience demographics in 1986.

"Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve 2001" also produced the best results ever for the program in Total Viewers, Adults 18-34, Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54. On average, there were 23.2 million viewers for the late-night special, which featured the traditional countdown to midnight from Times Square, as well as musical performances from Hollywood and live reports from Walt Disney World.

This year, following the traditional show, Dick Clark also hosted an additional hour of the late-night special. This segment produced the best results ever for ABC for that portion of the program in Total Viewers, Adults 18-34, Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54.

For the first time ever, ABC aired a primetime hour of "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" to precede the late-night festivities. The primetime segment of the special won its time period in Total Viewers and in the key 18-49 demographic. This portion of the program featured Clark introducing highlights of tours during the year 2000 by some of today's hottest musical groups and correspondents adding reports from around New York City.
