Skype Launches iPhone App

  • CNet, Monday, March 30, 2009 10:45 AM
A free Skype for iPhone application will be available for download from the iTunes App Store sometime tomorrow and CNet's Jessica Dolcourt reviews the hotly-anticipated app. In terms of navigation, Dolcourt says the Skype app looks and feels like it belongs on the iPhone, which she says will be "a triumph" for some. Just like the Web application, Skype for the iPhone offers free VoIP calling to other Skype users, but it only works if you're in range of a Wi-Fi network. Calls will not work over the Apple wireless network, but chatting will. IPhone Touch users will also be able to use the app, but they will need an embedded mic to talk.

The app also allows users to participate in conference calls, but you have to be invited to join them from the iPhone; you can't initiate them, yet. Other things Skype left out from the iPhone version: SMS, purchasing SkypeOut credit, being able to field a second incoming Skype call, file transferring and getting Skype voice mail. "We expect to see at least two of these added in the next version, but we'll hope for more," Dolcourt says.

Separately, the company also announced that it will launch Skype for Research in Motion's BlackBerry device in May. It has already announced Skype for Nokia phonoes, Google's Android and Microsoft's Windows Mobile.
