Thirteen-year-old Connor Mulcahey of Weston, Conn. won a $10,000 iTunes gift card and iPod touch, a Time Capsule and a MacBook Pro as a result of downloading the one billionth application from Apple's App Store. The milestone was marked by a front page ad in Friday's New York Times.

Started just nine months ago, the App Store has more than 35,000 applications available to owners of iPhones and iPod touches. The store has set off a trend among the makers of smart phones to offer additional marketplaces for consumers to download applications for their devices. --Aaron Baar
