Entertainment Startup Booyah Gets $4.5 Million

  • May 1, 2009
Digital entertainment startup Booyah has raised a $4.5 million in first-round funding through the iFund of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Silicon Valley's best-known venture capital firm. Founded by a trio of veterans of Blizzard Entertainment, Activision and Insomniac Games, Booyah sounds like it's still in stealth mode.

The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company says it is "creating a playful life companion that combines the immersive experiences that draw consumers to massively multi-player online games, the interconnectedness of social media, and the power of the iPhone and iPod touch."

Kleiner Perkins' investment may be based more on the co-founders' track records than what they come up with. Booyah CEO Keith Lee, for instance, was the lead producer for Blizzard Entertainment's Diablo III franchise, which has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide to date.--Mark Walsh
