Google Puts Chrome on TV

  • May 10, 2009
Google has designed a Google TV Ad campaign to raise awareness of its Chrome Web browser and help the Mountain View, Calif., company better understand how television can supplement its other online media campaigns, according to a post on the company's blog.

The ad was developed by the Google Japan team as an instructional video to demonstrate the simplicity of Chrome. Positive feedback emerged from the video, which led Google to create others that turned into Chrome Shorts on YouTube. One video features the Chrome logo knocking around blocks until they form a 3D rendering of the browser. The ads ran on various U.S. TV networks during the weekend.

Google's fledgling Web browser lacks momentum and market share. Microsoft's Internet Explorer has 66.10% of the browser market share; Mozilla's Firefox No 2 with 22.48%, followed by Safari at 08.21%, Google's Chrome at 1.42%, Netscape at 0.82%, Opera at 0.68%, and other the remaining, according to Net Applications' Market Share.

Mark Simon, VP of industry relations at Didit, said Google is looking to expand its share of the advertiser market beyond the search, in part, to find revenue sources that will sustain the business, even after search plateaus. Since the Chrome ads will run through Google TV, the ads target advertisers who may want to use Google TV, as much as they target consumers who may want to try out a new browser, he said.

Good news. I've been using Chrome exclusively for a few months and find it faster and friendlier than other browsers. Chrome is based on Safari.
