HuffPo'll Take New York

  • June 23, 2009
In a move that might not have Billy Joel scrambling to rework "New York State of Mind" anytime soon, but is nonetheless an indication that successful online publishers are going local to look for ads, the Huffington Post has added a New York section. HuffPost New York launched Tuesday with Editrix and publisher Arianna sentimentalizing her adopted city in an introductory post.

She also says: "We've formed partnerships with more than a dozen local outlets offering the best on-the-ground and in-the-boroughs reporting happening around town" -- these apparently include The New York Post. The heart and soul of the HuffPost is its (unpaid) celebrity bloggers, however. And the New York section premieres with a nice crop: Ed Koch kvetches about something, Sen. Chuck Shumer lists his favorite bike paths, Nora Ephron feels even worse about her neck, and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand woodenly touts the fact that Supreme Court nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor is from New York. All in all, a pretty good start. --John Capone
