The most popular iPhones apps at any given time are posted on the App Store home page, for both free and paid varieties. But those aren't the only iPhone app Top 1o lists. The new book, Best iPhone Apps: The Guide for Discriminating Downloaders, from O'Reilly Media, recommends 200 of the 65,000 apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Author Josh Clark has whittled those selections down to his own Top 10:

1. Stanza (free). Take novels, reference books, or your entire library on the road with you with this premium ebook reader for the iPhone and iPod Touch. It's packed with features to make iPhone reading as good as it can be, including bookmarks, screen and font choices.

2. Yelp (free). Yelp.com is the kingpin of grassroots review resources, featuring 6 million reviews of businesses across the US, Canada, the UK, and Ireland. Choose a category, and the app lists nearby businesses, each one ranked and reviewed.

3. Epicurious Recipes and Shopping List (free). Savor 25,000 recipes in a gorgeous wrapper, with online access to epicurious.com's recipe collection culled from Bon Appétit, Gourmet, and other magazines.

4. Now Playing (free). The only thing missing from this full-featured movie app is the popcorn. Now Playing lists every movie on screens in your area, complete with trailers and a huge collection of published movie reviews. The app lists local showtimes and, in many cases, lets you buy tickets.

5. Twitterrific (free or $3.99 without ads). The App Store is chockablock with great Twitter apps, but this one gets the top pick for its elegant interface, clever filtering, and a flock of chirpy features. Power users will appreciate the ability to filter the timeline, use multiple accounts, do searches, and review hot-topic trends.

6. Instapaper (free or $4.99 premium version). Instapaper.com is a simple, free service to store web pages for future reading. Instapaper's iPhone app fetches those articles from your online account and holds them until you're ready to focus.

7. ATM Hunter (free). Caught without cash? ATM Hunter shows you the closest place to make a withdrawal. Use your iPhone's GPS to list the bank machines closest to your current location, or enter any address or airport code to find nearby ATM machines.

8. Quickoffice Mobile Office Suite ($19.99, on sale for $12.99). Edit Microsoft Word and Excel files-and view a slew of other file types-with this capable suite for editing and sharing documents.

9. RunKeeper (free or $9.99 for pro version). This GPS-powered exercise log tracks your location, providing pace, distance, and altitude info, even mapping your route for a wide range of sports. Originally created for runners, the app can also track workouts for walkers, snowboarders, skiers, hikers, cyclists, and others.

10. Rolando and Rolando 2 ($5.99 and $9.99). If you have to pick just one iPhone game, make Rolando or its sequel the one. In Rolando, it's up to you to save the cartoon world of Rolandoland and its roly-poly residents. Tilt to roll rolandos through obstacles and avoid menacing shadow creatures.

If none of those fit the bill, there's also the list of the 10 most inappropriate iPhone apps recently compiled by The Huffington Post, some of which weren't approved by Apple. The effort highlights the ongoing controversy surrounding the company's opaque process for clearing iPhone apps.
