Univision: 2Q Revs Head South

money down

Univision Communications trimmed its second-quarter losses, but still suffered because of lower advertising results for its television and radio properties.

The company's net loss is now at $27.7 million, compared with $100.7 million in the second quarter of 2008. Net revenues slipped to $519.5 million from $541.4 million in the second quarter of 2008. Operating income declined to $147.7 million from $169.7 million.

Television revenues stood at $414.4 million for the period, virtually identical to its $414.2 million in the second-quarter 2008 reporting period.

Television revenues were sustained, in part, from an increase in subscriber fee revenue. But for Univision's TV networks and its stations, this was offset by lower advertising spending due to the economic downturn.

Much like its TV division, its radio segment's revenues got less advertising, with an 18.7% decline to $95.1 million in 2009 compared to $117.0 million in 2008, Univision's interactive media segment had revenues of $10.0 million in 2009 compared to $10.2 million in 2008 -- a decrease of 2.0%, primarily related to lower in-display advertising.
