Top Auction Site Draws More Unique Visitors Than Top Retail Site

For Holiday Visitors to auction sites during the first two weeks of the 2000 holiday-shopping season increased by 49.8% and 62.3%, respectively, over corresponding weeks in 1999, according to the third installment of the Media Metrix Holiday 2000 E-Commerce Series. The report also revealed that the number of average daily unique visitors to auction sites during the first two weeks of this holiday season, which ended Nov. 26 and Dec. 3, 2000,were 3.0 million and 3.1 million, respectively.

Top auction site Ebay.com had 2.6 million average daily unique visitors for the week ending Dec.3, 2000, 61.6% more than top retail site Amazon.com, which had 1.6 million average daily unique visitors. Theyear-over-year growth of the auction category as of week two of the 2000 holiday-shopping season was led by Ebay.com, which grew from 1.4 million average daily unique visitors the second week of last year's holiday-shopping season to 2.6 million for the week ending Dec. 3, 2000.
