Online Price War Moves To DVDs; 200 Waldenbooks Will Close

The holiday price war moved to another front yesterday when Wal-Mart cut the online prices on 10 hot holiday DVDs and Amazon and Target quickly joined the battle.

Like the book war that broke out between the online retailers last month, Miguel Bustillo and Ann Zimmerman report, the DVD battle guarantees that the retailers will lose money on the movies they're selling below wholesale prices. But they point out that retailers commonly price new movie releases close to or below cost to drive customer traffic.

Meanwhile, Jaclyn Trop reports in the Detroit Newsthat Borders will close about 200 Waldenbooks nationwide. About 130 Waldenbooks stores will remain. "We are working toward a viable, smaller but more profitable business," says Borders spokeswoman Anne Roman.
