Haagen-Dazs Supports Honey Bees

  • November 17, 2009
Haagen-Dazs sponsored the PBS's Chefs A' Field episode, "Disappearing Act: A World Without Bees," an in-depth exploration of the crisis facing the nation's most active and important pollinator -- the honey bee. The episode aired on Nov. 14.

Realizing early on that honey bees were crucial to the pollination of ingredients in more than half of the Haagen-Dazs brand's all-natural ice cream products, the brand created the Haagen-Dazs loves Honey Bees program and donated funds to Pennsylvania State University and the University of California, Davis for CCD and sustainable pollination research. In the past two years, the Haagen-Dazs brand has donated a total of $500,000 to both universities.

More recently, the brand has teamed up with jewelry designer Alex Woo, who created a bee-shaped pendant that will debut in November as a part of Woo's "Little Seasons" collection with 10% of sales being donated to CCD research. The pendant will be available online at www.alexwoo.com in silver, gold, white gold with diamonds, and a special edition yellow gold with diamonds.--Tanya Irwin
