As Proposition 8 makes its way to the U.S. District Court in San Francisco next month, will the upcoming trial over same-sex marriage be televised? Variety reports that extensive coverage would be a first for a federal court in the Western states, but major broadcast networks, Dow Jones & Co. and Hearst Corp., are asking for permission to broadcast and Webcast the proceedings, scheduled to begin Jan. 11. The plaintiffs seeking to overturn Proposition 8 -- a state constitutional ban on gay nuptials -- do not object to the idea, nor do their attorneys. Defenders of Prop. 8 do, saying witnesses and litigants will be subjected to the "potential for intimidation."
