'Globes,' NFL Draw Big Numbers

Ricky Gervais

Some big TV programming brought viewers back on a mid-January Sunday: NFL playoffs, "Golden Globes" and the return of Fox's "24."

After the dust settled, CBS came out on top with a Nielsen preliminary 5.1 rating/13 share among 18-49 viewers. It also got a rare 18-34 win for the night, just getting by NBC with a 3.7/11.

Much of this was thanks to a close NFL football playoff game between the New York Jets and the San Diego Chargers, a game that roped in a big-time 11.3 rating/30 share and some 33 million viewers overall.

NBC's "67th Golden Globe Awards" improved 10% this year over last to a 5.4 rating/13 share. It earned a 14% gain in overall viewers to 16.9 million. This gave NBC a second-place spot for the night with a 4.1/10.

Against a busy Sunday, Fox struggled somewhat to look for viewers. A new season of "24" got off to a modest 3.8/9 with a special two-hour version at 9 p.m. It was down 12% versus a year ago. New drama "Human Target" had a decent 2.9/8 running at 8 p.m. This put Fox in third place at a 2.9/7.

ABC suffered somewhat -- perhaps against the more female-skewing "Golden Globes" hosted by British actor Ricky Gervais.

"Desperate Housewives" hit a series-low 3.7/9. Its companion 10 p.m. "Brothers & Sisters" was also down: 23% versus the week before, to a 2.7/7. ABC was almost a half a rating point behind Fox for the night with a 2.5/6.

Univision pulled up the rear with a 0.9/2 in the 18-49 demographic.

And I bet during the final 10-15 minutes of the Jets game the audience got as high as 38-40 million.
