Iran Pulls Plug On Gmail

Iran's telecommunications agency Wednesday said it was permanently suspending Google's Gmail service, claiming a new national Iranian email service would be introduced for Iranian citizens soon. It wasn't clear at presstime, what, if any capacity Iran had for disabling Google's Gmail service, but the Iranian government has been known to be working on means of gaining more control over the deployment of online communications and microblogging technologies ever since Twitter became a significant platform for spreading dissent in the country.
