Amanpour Exits CNN's Global Post For ABC's 'Week'

Christine Amanpour

Longtime CNN global-trotting correspondent Christiane Amanpour has gone domestic -- becoming the new anchor at ABC News' "This Week." Amanpour, who joined CNN in 1983, will now turn her attention to domestic issues, although she will appear on other ABC News shows to discuss important international concerns. She begins her new job in August.

Amanpour replaces George Stephanopoulos, who moved to "Good Morning America" in December when Diane Sawyer took over Charles Gibson's post at "World News."

ABC News president David Westin, in an ABC News staff email, said Amanpour brought "a wealth of experience and knowledge, as well as a deep commitment to bringing news of the world to the American people."

Noting her news cred, he also called her a "formidable interviewer," who achieved "global exclusives with many of the world's leaders and military chiefs from the Middle East, Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan to Africa, Europe and the United States."

"With Christiane, we have the opportunity to provide our audiences with something different on Sunday mornings," he said.

Until she begins in August, Jake Tapper will serve as the fill-in anchor for "This Week." Her presence may give the third-place Sunday show a boost. The hour-long program ranks behind rivals NBC's "Meet the Press" and CBS' "Face the Nation."
