Sales Of High-End Beauty Products Down 6%

  • March 24, 2010
It's no secret that luxury items suffered in 2009, but results look especially ugly for beauty: The NPD Group reports that sales in the prestige beauty category fell 6% in 2009, to $8.19 billion.

Prestige fragrance sales declined 10% to $2.48 billion, with falloff for both men and women's products; skincare dipped 4% to $2.47 billion; and makeup decreased 5% to $3.16 billion.

The much smaller "product with purchase" category also eased 5%, to $83 million. Skincare was the only category to register fourth-quarter growth, reports the Port-Washington, N.Y.-based market research company.--Sarah Mahoney
