Sinclair Trumpets Ad Rises Across The Board

Sinclair Broadcast Group, like other TV station groups, is reporting strong financial results for its first quarter -- gaining almost 13% in broadcast revenues.

The group posted $147.9 million in revenues from continuing operations. Local advertising revenues climbed 14.1%, with national spot advertising results up 8.2%. Sinclair posted $1.5 million in political advertising in the period versus $300,000 in the first quarter of 2009.

Sinclair's biggest advertising category -- automotive -- was a major contributor, with a 35.6% improvement. Also making advertising gains in the period were schools, medical, grocery and home products. Sinclair said paid programming (infomercials, for example) and telecommunications advertising revenues were down for the quarter.

The next financial periods also look good. David Smith, president/CEO of Sinclair, stated: "For the second quarter, we continue to see strong growth as both the majority of our advertising categories pace positive and the number of new advertisers increases."

Sinclair reported net income of $11.5 million in the quarter versus a net profit of $15.2 million in first-quarter 2009. The first-quarter 2010 results were a bit higher than analysts' projections.
