Whole Foods Launches First-Ever "Non GMO" Soymilk

  • July 26, 2010

In a move that signals growing consumer dissatisfaction with genetically-modified soy products, Whole Foods Market says it is partnering with Earth Balance for a national launch of organic and Non-GMO Project-verified soymilk, which it claims is an industry first.

An estimated 90% of domestic soybeans have been genetically modified. Earth Balance, which also makes natural spreads and nut butters, will work with the non-GMO Project, "a collaboration of manufacturers, consumers, processors, distributors, farmers, seed breeders and retailers dedicated to providing consumers with information about GMO risks."

The Earth Balance soymilk will bear the "Non-GMO Project Verified" seal, and is made from 100% USA-grown soybeans.

Not a first -- maybe the first throwback. Once upon a time, none of the soy milks were genetically modified.
