Survey: Shoppers On A Budget Will Flock To Wal-Mart

  • Bloomberg, Monday, October 11, 2010 10:31 AM
Consumers will curb spending this holiday season as the unemployment rate hovers near a 26-year high, Matthew Boyle reports, and that's good news for Walmart outlets. The amount of shoppers who plan to do more shopping in them exceeds the share of those who expected to do less by 22%, according to Consumer Edge Research.

"While consumers are indicating they will be spending about as much on the holidays this year as they did last year, they are also indicating they will be increasing their holiday shopping at the discount retailers, likely to seek out the best deals possible," writes Consumer Edge analyst Bill Pecoriello.

The study, which canvassed about 2,500 people in the U.S., says that Amazon, eBay and Target may also benefit while Costco, Toys 'R' Us and department stores like Macy's may suffer.
