Discovery Familia Targets Hispanic Moms

Discovery is recasting one of its Spanish-language networks as a destination for Hispanic mothers, at least in prime time, offering 130 hours of new programming. Launched three years ago as a family channel, Discovery Familia is zeroing in on a group that is often the heads of household.

Educational programming for preschool-age children will continue to fill daytime, but the network -- with distribution listed at 3 million homes -- will focus on three genres in prime time valued by Hispanic mothers: "their kids, their home and their time."

One new series targeting kids is "My Big Big Friend," an animated show whose lead, Yuri, is a shy 6-year-old who imagines himself brave and adventurous. With the help of his imaginary friends, Goliat, Nessa and Bongo, he realizes his potential.

The "My Kids" programming will also offer advice about raising a family that serves as "a personal parenting coach." In addition, the lineup includes shows on cooking, home renovation, beauty and wellness. "Conociendo a mi bebe" follows the daily routines of Hispanic moms during the first six months after childbirth, while "4 Ingredients" presents great family recipes that use only four ingredients or less.

Segments tabbed "Nuestros Hijos (Our Children)" featuring early childhood expert Jeannette Torres-Álvarez will be sprinkled in. One aspect she will focus on is preserving the Spanish language at home. Discovery said she is the network's new "brand ambassador."

Bilai Joa Silar, vice president and channel director, Discovery Networks U.S. Hispanic Group, states that the network has a message for Hispanic mothers: "We are completely devoted to filling the void on television that responds to their needs and interests."

Discovery also has 12-year-old Discovery en Español in 7 million homes.
