Around the Net

Rant Of The Year

Digital business strategist David Dalka has a serious beef with Facebook, and it's got everything to with font size. Okay, not everything, but the social net recently shrinking its font to make room for more ads, says Dalka, proves that consumer welfare is not a top priority for the company. "Do they actually disrespect your personal space that much?" he asks. "Is this how little ... Facebook thinks of you, their userbase? Unfortunately, the answer seems to be yes."

Valid point or not, Facebook should be happy to know that it's not the only social net facing Dalka's wrath. Other manifestations of consumer "abuse" include "Linkedin reducing your ability to search your social network, Yelp reportedly using high pressure tactics to sell ads, [and] Twitter's promoted tweets," he insists. "It is time for the web community to stand up and shout that they are sick and tired of constant terms of service changes, privacy changes, steps backward in usability that degrade our mutual experience, comfort level with the sites we use and our enjoyment of the web." Quixotic cries in the dark? Sound like it, particularly given the vague, broad-stroke nature of Dalka's argument, and the fact far more pointed concerns have hardly slowed the rise or Facebook, LinkedIn, and the like.
