Knology Cable Offers 'Crown' To Biz Clients

Cable has been long hyped a "Triple Play" brand for its bundle of phone, video and broadband services for a single price. Now, cable operator Knology is borrowing from the Kentucky Derby and related races for a twist: the "Triple Crown."

The royal service is for its business customers, which is an area that cable operators are increasingly looking to for growth. For now, the crux of the "Triple Crown" is higher broadband speeds for businesses.

Todd Holt, company president, said that business-customer growth in the first quarter was solid, and "we hope this is a leading indicator that the economic environment is improving."

Knology operates in multiple Southern markets and as far north as South Dakota, as well as in Lawrence, Kansas, after the acquisition of Sunflower Broadband.

More broadly, the company said that video customers it lost in the quarter were mostly those who subscribed to just a video service, and not a triple play. The single-play customers tend to be more price-focused, the company said, where price increases instituted may have had an impact.

Knology is a top-20 multichannel video provider, with about 255,000 video customers at the end of March.

CEO Roger L. Johnson stated that the integration of the Sunflower operations have been completed.
