Google: Mobile Maps Surpassing Desktop Version

Marking a key turning point for one of Google's most promising services, the mobile use of Google Maps is about to surpass its use on desktop computers. So said Marissa Mayer, Google's VP of location and local services, at a conference this week, reports Marketing Pilgrim. "This is a significant milestone as the search giant continues to make its play into the location based, social, 'whatever it is they want' space," Marketing Pilgrim writes.

According to Mayer, Google Maps for mobile has now surpassed 200 million installs. Also of particular note, Mayer said that about 20% of the searches now seen on Google are for local information. Meanwhile, continuing to push the limits of Google Maps for Android, Google just make it easier for users to check-in somewhere using Google Latitude and then rate the place using the Hotpot engine, which was recently integrated into Google Places.

Still, regarding Google's larger location-based local play, "Mayer basically admitted that there is work to be done to get all of these disparate pieces to come together to make a cohesive and coherent offering," Marketing Pilgrim reports.
