Volkswagen Strategy Pays Off

With sales up 18.5% so far this year driven by demand for the new Jetta, the automaker is doing several things right. "They've got a very aggressive strategy, and they're coming out with very aggressive pricing," said analyst George Magliano at IHS Automotive. "And it seems to be paying off for them." It also helps the company lower its prices by building vehicles here. The new Passat, which the company is building at its new $1 billion plant in Tennessee, starts at $7,000 less than its predecessor, which was built in Europe. The company also lowered the price of the new Mexican-built Jetta by around $1,700. Volkswagen hopes to increase U.S. sales to 800,000 by 2018 and its groupwide sales, including Audi, to 1 million.
