GroupM, Maxus Win $1B SC Johnson Media Business

WPP's GroupM has won global buying duties for household products maker S.C. Johnson after a review. The account, with total spending approaching $1 billion, will be parked at Maxus, which was also awarded half of the client's media-planning account.

SCJ's domestic spending is estimated at upwards of $400 million.

It's been an excellent couple of weeks for WPP's Maxus, which won a huge piece of the Comcast-NBC media assignment (about $500 million) last week, including the NBC TV properties and Universal Studio work.

SCJ confirmed today that it completed its review, but made no mention of the media assignments. On the creative agency side, the business was split between Omnicom's BBDO, which was awarded duties for the client's pest control and home storage products. The shop was also selected to handle media-planning duties for those pieces of business.

WPP's Ogilvy & Mather won creative chores for SCJ's home fragrance and home cleaning brands, for which sibling shop Maxus will handle media planning.

On the outs: longtime incumbent Draftfcb, the Interpublic agency that worked on the SCJ account for nearly 60 years. And while it's probably very little solace to the agency, the client said in a statement: "It was a very difficult decision, and we truly value the many contributions the Draftfcb team has made to the success of our business over a longstanding partnership."

On Thursday, during IPG's second-quarter earnings call, company CEO Michael Roth praised Draftfcb as one of the company's standout performers. On Friday, it issued a statement saying: "We are disappointed with today's decision. We remain fully committed to Draftfcb's integrated model, which has made it among our top performing units in recent years."

IPG said the financial impact of the account loss "will not be material" to 2011 results -- which makes sense, given that Draft will handle the account for most of the year. The company did not address the potential impact on next year's results.

S.C. Johnson, family owned and based in Racine, Wis., markets brands such as Glade air freshener, Raid insecticide, Ziploc food storage bags and Pledge furniture polish. The company claims annual sales of $8 billion.
