Roku Ups Offerings With HBO Go

Roku, the box that propels over-the-top TV, said it is offering a less expensive version, while continuing to bulk up its content offerings. Still, the newest content addition carries no risk of cord-cutting for the programmer.

It’s HBO Go, the service that allows access to a slew of on-demand content, including current shows on the pay-TV network. However, it is only accessible to customers who pay for HBO’s traditional service.

The latest version of Roku -- the LT -- costs $49.99, $10 lower than its current least-expensive model. Roku’s cornerstone is an ability to flow Netflix or Hulu Plus content onto the TV screen, as well as some sports, FoxNews.com and a chance to play "Angry Birds."

"Our goal is a Roku in every home," stated Roku CEO Anthony Wood. "The Roku LT opens up streaming to more people by lowering the cost of entry in these difficult economic times."

HBO Go has been part of a TV Everywhere movement, allowing access to network content on the go -- provided a person pays for TV access. Shows offered include “Boardwalk Empire” and “True Blood," as well as library content. HBO's link with Roku is a signal that more and more programmers are searching for ways to capitalize on the over-the-top movement, yet still protect existing business models.

Other higher-end Roku boxes go for $79.99 and $99.99.
