Pauley To Leave NBC After 27 Years

  • February 20, 2003
Former Today host Jane Pauley announced Thursday that she will be leaving NBC in June after her contract runs out. Pauley, who joined NBC as co-host of Today at the age of 27 in 1975, said she wanted to focus on something else. “No amount of explaining would be sufficient for some, but for others of my generation my decision to move on needs little explanation. I follow the lead of many women and men who have left established careers to follow a dream, find more meaning, or just more freedom. I have felt the urge to try new things,” Pauley said in a prepared statement. She said she didn’t know what she was going to do next. NBC said they were sorry to see her go. “While I would have liked to convince Jane otherwise, I was unable to – this was her decision,” said Neal Shapiro, president of NBC News and former executive producer of Dateline. Pauley had been founding co-anchor of the weekly newsmagazine in 1992.
