Yum! Brands Drops Food Stamps Push

  • November 21, 2011

Yum! Brands, owner of KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut among other chains, has dropped its efforts to expand low-income Americans' ability to use food stamps in its retail outlets, reports The Detroit News.

Last week, Bloomberg reported that Yum! had lobbied state officials in Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Florida, urging them to allow food stamps to be used at its eateries.

However, Yum! backed down in the face of opposition from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture.

"After discussions with program administrators and key legislators, we have decided not to further pursue the expansion of the Supplement Nutrition Assistance Program's (SNAP) Restaurant Meals Program to enable homeless, elderly and the disabled people to access restaurant foods with their SNAP benefits," confirmed Paul Carothers,VP, government affairs. "We understand there was little support for this initiative," he said.
