GM Lets You Build Your Engine

  • January 17, 2012

When I was a kid there was a company that sold a toothpick made out of 14k gold, "For the man who has everything." Well, General Motors' "Crate Engine Build Experience" really IS for man who has everything...everything but an LS7 engine he built himself. (I know it would be correct to say "person" but forget it).

On media.GM.com you can see how one Jeff Kasper, a marketer for a semiconductor firm, got to build  his own 505-horsepower crate engine at GM's Performance Build Center in Wixom, Mich.

The program is mostly for people who are buying a 'Vette and want to participate in the vehicle's assembly by helping to put the engine together. The customer handles their own travel, and GM arranges the visit, including a day in spent assembling the engine.

When an order is placed through a Chevrolet dealer, a special concierge contacts the customer to verify participation and help coordinate arrangements. "Travel arrangements to and from Metro Detroit are the customer’s responsibility, but the concierge helps schedule the engine build; coordinates the customer’s activities at the Performance Build Center; arranges local lodging and meals; and arranges ground transportation in the area," says GM.

Ok, my ultimate vacation would probably involve base jumping into a Norwegian Fjord, getting beat up in Montmartre, or just a lot of good food and booze, but for a car "person" this would be pretty much heaven. And for starting price of $23,000, it costs less than a trip to Geneva for a moderately expensive watch.
