Bamboom Becomes Aereo, Takes Diller Money

Remember Bamboom -- the service that lets user watch select pieces of TV content on their wireless devices? Well, it’s been renamed Aereo, and taken an investment from Barry Diller -- “and/or his IAC Web holding company,” AllThingsD reports. Otherwise “the concept appears to be the same: The service will let users stream broadcast TV stations to their Internet-connected devices, wherever they are.”

The startup is expected to host a press event at Diller’s IAC headquarters on Tuesday, during which it will most likely detail a new strategy, and service specifics. Press materials describe Diller as a “minority investor” in Aereo, but don’t say whether he’s backing the company personally, AllThingsD notes. “Financing aside, a more fundamental question about Aereo would be: Who is the market for this thing?”

There’s also the question of what sort of content users can expect from the service. AllThingsD expects Aereo to make the case that a large percentage of TV viewing is confined to the broadcast networks like ABC, Fox, CBS and NBC. The only problem is that that won’t satisfy those users who expecte to use the service to watch CNN or Bravo or Lifetime, not to mention ESPN’s coverage of Monday Night Football.
