Data Security Is Talk Of Mobile World Congress

As the March 1 start date of Google’s new security policy draws near, growing concern about how data will be gathered and used was the talk of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

EU deputy commissioner Viviane Reding visited the congress on Tuesday, looking to persuade countries to install data security into a new European law.

She told Sky News: "People are nervous -- 84% of people in Great Britain think that their private data is misused by private companies. We do need to give them an answer.

"Data is the bloodstream, if you want, of the new industry. It is needed but people need to have confidence and security about what is happening with it."

But Stuart Miles, from tech website Pocket-lint, is not sure smartphone users are too concerned about privacy and how their data is handled.

"You do have a choice", he said. "When installing apps, you have a chance to refuse data harvesting. Some see it as a benefit, because I may get a better deal or a special offer from a company working in my area of interest."
