Dell To Challenge Apple In Tablet Arena

  • March 16, 2012

Dell's chief commercial officer Steve Felice said the tablet market is still open, reports Reuters. The company is planning a new foray given Microsoft's new Windows 8 operating platform, expected later this year. It will have a touch interface that works across desktop computers, tablets and smartphones. Felice told the wire service that Dell may also make Android tablets again. Dell has also just launched a so-called ultrabook, a high-end notebook that is light and thin but still powerful.

The headline gives Dell more credit than deserved. Anyone can announce a challenge, but is it credible? Dell's never been a product innovator - merely a supply chain monster, ala Wal-Mart. As the market has shifted from PCs to mobile Dell has missed it completely, and now relies entirely on Windows 8 - which is years late to market and has no latent market awaiting its launch. Given Dell's complete inability to understand market needs, and its unlikely ability to deliver a product better than an iPad 2 at the reduced $299 price it really has no chance of mounting a challenge, according to Forbes magazine http://onforb.es/GEGNud
