'Whitney,' 'Criminal' Rise, But 'Bent' Went Bust

Whitney

U.S. TV viewers were not looking for a new comedy about a surfer-dude contractor working on a highly stressed single mom's house on Wednesday.

The new NBC show "Bent" pulled in with the lowest rating ever for a new NBC comedy -- a Nielsen preliminary 1.0 rating/3 share among 18-49 viewers. Admittedly, it was against one of the highest-rated TV shows, "American Idol."

Perhaps more troubling, it wasn't even up against the full wrath of Wednesday night television: "Modern Family" at 9 p.m was a repeat.

For its part, "American Idol" fell a half a rating point to a 4.9 rating/14 share for its two-hour 8-10 p.m. Wednesday performance show. But other big competitors didn't do as well, either. CBS' "Survivor" dropped a bit to another series low -- now at a 2.7/8, running at 8 p.m. At 10 p.m., "CSI" was also down at a bit to a 2.5/7.

Somewhat of a silver lining for NBC -- two of its earlier-evening comedies grew a couple of tenths of a rating point: "Whitney" up a to 1.6/5 and "Are You There, Chelsea" at 1.4/4. That said, the NBC comedies were running against repeats of ABC's comedies "The Middle" and "Suburgatory."

Another improvement: CBS' "Criminal Minds" almost gained half a rating point to a 3.2/8, the second-highest-rated 18-49 show of the night.

CW's "One Tree Hill" fell back down the hill a bit to land at a 0.7/2.

Fox won the night with a 4.9/14. CBS was at a 2.8/8; ABC and Univision each posted a 1.5/4; NBC, a 1.0/3; and CW, 0.6/2.

I liked it! I hope they don't cancel Bent.
