B&N Shipping Nook 'GlowLight' Already

Citing strong demand, Barnes & Noble said Tuesday it began shipping its new glow-in-the dark Nook model two weeks ahead of schedule to customers who had pre-ordered the device. The $139 Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight is the first e-reader to hit the market allowing users to read in bed with the lights out.

“Due to very strong pre-order demand, the company recommends that customers who wish to gift the device for Mother’s Day pre-order now, as orders will be fulfilled on a first-come, first-serve basis,” the company stated in a release today.

Beginning this week, Barnes & Noble also said the new Nook model will be available for demonstration in its 700 stores nationwide. The bookseller is touting the GlowLight e-reader as the perfect solution for couples when one person wants to go to sleep and the other wants to read in bed. It also says the new Nook, which also uses non-glare E-Ink technology, makes it as easy to read at the beach as in the dark.

Barnes & Noble said pre-orders will ship throughout the month and “limited quantities” of the device would be available for sale in stores in early May. The company formally announced the GlowLight on April 12.

Update: New York Times Tech columnist David Pogue has posted a "glowing" review of the Nook device.
