Childhood obesity poses a grave threat to the current and future health of young Americans, prompting initiatives from the public and private sectors highlighting the importance of eating right and exercising. The Clear Channel Communities, which carries out community engagement for CC Media Holdings, has partnered with the Ad Council to launch a new campaign of public service announcements called “Healthy Habits,” which includes both radio and online spots. The Healthy Habits campaign will promote a new national education program from the National Institutes of Health designed to combat childhood obesity. It's called We Can! (Ways to Enhance Children's Activity & Nutrition). The campaign, which is coordinated with the Ad Council’s other collaborative efforts with the federal government to combat childhood obesity, is the second in a series of quarterly “spotlights” of causes by Clear Channel Communities. The first focused on DonorsChoose.org, which funds teachers’ local projects. Clear Channel Communities was launched in January of this year to raise awareness for issues in areas including family and social impact, health and wellness, education and literacy, music and arts. The timing of the launch suggests the impetus came from Bob Pittman, who was appointed CEO of CC Media Holdings in October 2011, and has a noteworthy history as a philanthropist. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of childhood obesity has increased threefold over the last 30 years, to the point where some 30% of all American children and teens are overweight or obese.
