Pinterest Expands Attribution Program
Elsewhere in social land, Pinterest is broadening its attribution tools for sites -- including Etsy, 500px, Kickstarter, Slideshare, and SoundCloud -- by linking to source content, and giving full credit to publishers. The social-sharing site originally unveiled attribution features back in May, with rollouts to Flickr, YouTube, Behance, and Vimeo. As CNet notes, this week’s announcement expands the reach of the program -- and not a moment too soon.
“A backlash by content creators not too appreciative of having their creations posted on the site without credit led photo-sharing site Flickr to add an ‘opt out’ code to all Flickr pages with copyrighted or protected images,” CNet recalls. “Pinterest itself even issued a code to Web admins that warned visitors that the site did not allow pinning to Pinterest.” Going forward, Pinterest says it is determined "to try to give credit where credit is due," according to a Wednesday blog post.
"That's why we've always tried to include attribution and direct links to sources of content." The site, which launched in mid-2010, lets users collect videos, photos, and other "things they love" from around the Web, and "pin" them on interest-specific boards.
