ComEd Repurposes Fridges

  • July 17, 2012

Electric utility ComEd is repurposing old refrigerators and freezers into more useful devices around Chicago in a promotion to promote its Recycle Rewards Program.

For the promotion, the utility and its agency, Leo Burnett Chicago, commissioned local artists to turn 10 refrigerators into functional pieces of art for display on the Windy City’s Magnificent Mile. Among the fridges included in the “MetamorFridges” exhibit are refrigerators that have been turned into solar-powered cell phone charging stations, a relaxation “Bark-a-Lounge” for tired dogs and an exhibit exploring the exchange of energy.

The campaign is designed to get people to think about the costs of having two working refrigerators, as well as to get them to think about their overall energy consumption. The fridges will be on display through August 19.
