Developers Favor Apple Over Google Android Platform

Mobile operating systems can’t succeed with flourishing app markets, and app markets can’t flourish without happy app developers.

At least on the enterprise side of things, Apple iOS is currently surging ahead of the Google Android platform, according to new survey results from Appcelerator, a mobile platform development firm.

“In the largest survey of its kind, Appcelerator developers were asked what operating system is best positioned to win the enterprise market,” TechCrunch reports.

Their response? Developers said iOS over Android by a 53% to 38% margin. Last year, by contrast, the two companies were in a dead heat for the enterprise market -- tied at 44%.

“Apple’s strength in the enterprise was attributed to several factors, including the success of the company’s best-selling iPad tablet."

“Apple’s strength in the enterprise was attributed to several factors, including the success of the company’s best-selling iPad tablet … fragmentation among Android devices … regular reporting of Android malware, and ‘resulting anecdotal reporting of enterprises re-evaluating widespread Android deployment outside of particular business vertical implementations,’” eWeek writes.

Each quarter, in conjunction with IDC Research, Appcelerator surveys its community of 340,000 developers. This quarter, more than 3,600 developers participated in the survey.

Meanwhile, in what TechCrunch calls “a surprise of sorts,” Windows showed some life as 33% said they would be interested in developing apps on the Windows 8 tablet.

"Android's perceived weakness in the enterprise is a key Microsoft opportunity,” the report explains.

“The good news for Microsoft is that mobile app developers are interested in Windows 8,” the Los Angeles Times notes. “The bad news is that, with Microsoft not yet competitive in the mobile space, most developers are giving Apple a big lead as to who will win in the enterprise.”
