Like, Wow! AwesomenessTV Lands $3.5 Million

AwesomenessTV, one of the new channels launched this summer as part of YouTube’s 100 channels initiative, has secured $3.5 million in funding from a group of investors led by MK Capital, a venture capital firm that has invested in other original YouTube content makers, including Machinima, the number one channel on the video-sharing site.

Other investors in the round include Greycroft Venture Partners, New World Ventures, Machinima CEO Allen DeBevoise, United Talent Agency CEO Jeremy Zimmer and MediaLink CEO Michael Kassan.

Since launching in June, AwesomenessTV has amassed 12 million views and nearly 87,000 subscribers. Its programs include “IMO,” a talk show, “Randomness,” a sketch comedy series, and “Make Me Over.”

Brian Robbins, the channel’s founder, has targeted young viewers for most of his career as a TV and movie producer. His resume includes the WB and CW series “Smallville” and “One Tree Hill.”

MK Capital partner Mark Terbeek, who led the investment round and will serve on the board of AwesomenessTV, believes the YouTube channel will be a success because most of its target audience is already using the video-sharing site as a primary entertainment destination.

"We know they're on YouTube in droves and showing up more and more every day," Terbeek tells the Los Angeles Times. "Brian, by targeting that young demo, doesn't have to convince a younger demographic to change their behavior. They're there already."
