Report: Apple Wants To Get Under TV's Hood, Talks To Cable Ops

  • August 16, 2012

Apple is talking with big U.S. cable TV operators about enabling subscribers to utilize an Apple device as a digital set-top box for receiving TV programming and other content, reports The Wall Street Journal.

Citing unnamed sources, the Journal said the talks represent Apple’s biggest push yet to muscle its way into America’s living rooms -- something other big tech firms have largely failed at over the years, most notably Microsoft (WebTV and Microsoft TV).

Apple already is a signficant "over-the-top" television provider, bypassing conventional TV distribution operators via both its iTunes store and its Apple TV device for streaming Netflix and other over-the-top TV programming providers.
