'E-Cycling' On The Rise
Consumers are becoming more aware of the need to recycle their electronics. According to a new study from the Consumer Electronics Association, nine out of every 10 consumers believe its important to recycle their electronics, though only about six in 10 know where and how to do so.
According to the study, about 60% of consumer electronics owners removed at least one device from their homes in the past year, with about half (48%) donating them for reuse, and 26% recycling them. Of the 12% who put an electronics device in the trash, most cited convenience as the driving factor for choosing to not reuse or recycle the device. To make things easier, the CEA has created an eCycling zip code locator on its Greenergadgets.org site, where consumers can find certified recyclers.
“The CE industry aims to make recycling consumer electronics as easy as purchasing them. The marked increase in consumer awareness of how and where to recycle their electronics illustrates the progress our industry has made on this issue,” said Walter Alcorn, CEA’s vice president of environmental affairs and industry sustainability, in a statement.--Aaron Baar
