iPhone 5 Sales Top 5 Million
Apple today announced iPhone 5 sales reached a new opening weekend record of more than 5 million handsets including preorders. The company also said more than 100 million iOS devices have been updated to iOS 6 since the new version of the platform was released last week.
Apple last week said it sold more than 2 million iPhones during the device’s first 24 hours of availability. However, some analysts suggested the company could sell up to 10 million iPhones through the weekend. Still, Apple CEO Tim Cook in a statement said demand for the iPhone 5 had outstripped initial demand.
“While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone,” he said.
The iPhone 5 will be available in 22 more countries on Sept. 28 and 100 countries by year's end.
