Kraft Foods reports that it's on track to complete a three-year initiative to reduce sodium by an average of 10% across its North American portfolio.
In total, Kraft has reduced sodium content in more than 1,000 SKUs across 24 different product categories,
The company says reductions to date have eliminated the equivalent of 14 million pounds or 1 billion teaspoons of salt annually from N.A. consumers' diets.
Sodium in products including Kraft Grated Parmesan Cheese, Breakstone's 2% Cottage Cheese and Oscar Mayer Bacon has been reduced by more than 10%, according to Kraft. Other products have seen much larger reductions, including Kraft Original BBQ Sauce (-40%), Kraft Easy Mac Cups Original and Triple Cheese (-30%), Teddy Grahams Honey Graham Snacks (-25%), Oscar Mayer Deli-Fresh Smoked Hame and OM Beef Bologna (-25%), and Kraft Singles American Slices (-18%).
Kraft VP research, development and quality Russ Moroz said that more than half of North Americans are interested in reducing their sodium intake, and Kraft has "worked hard to make meaningful reductions in sodium" without sacrificing products' taste, quality or safety.
